What exactly should we know about translation?

Unlike the English-speaking world, the Chinese-speaking people based in Taiwan use a completely different "syntax" when they try to make themselves clear in speech or through writing. To make it brief, this linguistic term is also called the “sentence structure” as you see it in a grammar book sold in a local bookstore. Let’s now put away all those wording or big words just to focus on its appearance.

The appearance of a paragraph written in Traditional Chinese is like a pile of "pastry" or "cakes" according to a book of theoretical analysis for translation practices, which was first published by a famous Chinese author and master of translation named Si-Guo. A paragraph may look just like putting a pile of cupcakes on the table. You may find a few cupcakes here and a few cupcakes there scattered around the dining table. It's hard to find a long sentence written in Traditional Chinese because most of the time, a long sentence written in English will be broken into several lexical chunks (also called the “word chunk”, the phrases so to speak) to recompose shorter sentences.

What you see right now is one short sentence followed after another short sentence or several short sentences as divided by proper punctuation.

「翻譯是藝術,要動手做的,不是談理論,研究一下,思想一番,就可以學會。」(摘自思果的翻譯研究)

"Nothing particular class of theoretical doctrine is involved; translation is like a piece of arts you must do it yourself. If you can use your imagination and be creative to study hard while spending more time doing research, anyone can learn the know-how."
